Johnson Group Professional Mosquito Control Service

With over 70 years of professional mosquito control experience, Johnson Group serves a wide range of clients including residential estates, restaurants, schools, construction sites, offices, and outdoor venues.

We first assess standing water, breeding sources, and adult mosquito activity, then develop a control plan according to site conditions, prioritising physical control, trapping, and low-toxicity solutions. If the mosquito problem is severe, we can also arrange professional cold fogging and other targeted treatments to help control larvae, adult mosquitoes, and ongoing mosquito risk.

Recurrent Mosquito Problems & Control Needs

Hong Kong’s warm and humid weather, together with frequent rainy seasons, means mosquito problems can become active earlier in recent years due to earlier warming and increased rainfall. Common high-risk mosquito hotspots include:

  • Standing Water, Various Containers, Drainage Channels & Cluttered Areas: these easily collect water and become mosquito breeding sites
  • Older Buildings, Residential Podiums, Refuse Collection Points & Recycling Areas: these environments are more complex and harder to manage, making hygiene blind spots more likely
  • Grass Areas, Landscaped Zones & Construction Sites: these areas are prone to standing water and are also common places for mosquitoes to shelter and breed

The common Aedes albopictus in Hong Kong can transmit chikungunya fever, so mosquito prevention should not only begin in summer or after mosquito numbers rise. If only adult mosquitoes are treated, without removing standing water and controlling larvae at the same time, mosquito problems are likely to return.

Why Choose Johnson Group Mosquito Control Service?

Johnson Group follows the Home + Green Pest Management™ concept, believing that traditional chemical sprays, mosquito oils, or one-time fogging alone may not provide long-term control. Therefore, we first design a tailored mosquito control and prevention plan based on the site’s mosquito sources, risks, and actual needs.

Our solutions prioritise environmental improvement, standing water management, physical control, trapping and monitoring, and low-toxicity methods, with professional pesticide application arranged when needed. In addition to source control, we also provide indoor and outdoor mosquito traps, glue-board mosquito killers, solar mosquito traps, and mosquito monitoring equipment. This means mosquito control is not limited to one-off treatment, but instead becomes a more long-term mosquito management approach.

Mosquito Control Methods & Solutions

As a leading mosquito control company in Hong Kong, Johnson Group rejects indiscriminate spraying of high-toxicity chemicals. Our mosquito control system covers the full mosquito lifecycle, targeting both larvae removal and adult mosquito elimination, supported by effective, safe mosquito control materials and complete equipment.

Our professional mosquito control services can be flexibly adjusted according to the mosquito sources and safety requirements of homes, commercial premises, and outdoor venues, allowing us to create a comprehensive mosquito control and management plan for different locations.

Larva (Mosquito Wriggler) Control

Mosquitoes primarily breed in standing water, so control must target the source—the larvae. Johnson Group technicians first inspect potential breeding sites such as flowerpot saucers, drain outlets, rooftops, water tanks, and outdoor containers.

For mosquito eggs and larvae (wrigglers) in standing water, we offer more professional options than typical pest-control companies, applying larvicides including Aquatain AMF Mosquito Film™, mosquito larvicide oil, mosquito larvicide sand, or Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis (Bti). Treating larvae early reduces their development into adult mosquitoes, thereby lowering subsequent mosquito problems at the source. We also provide recommendations to improve the removal of standing water, making the mosquito barrier more durable.

Mosquito Traps & Breeding Disruption

Using the egg-laying behaviour of female mosquitoes, Johnson Group technicians place mosquito traps in high-risk outdoor areas, including In2Care Mosquito Traps and GraviTrap Mosquito Trapper, to attract and eliminate female mosquitoes that are ready to lay eggs.

This type of solution is especially suitable for estates, campuses, and outdoor venues with Aedes albopictus risks or higher mosquito indices, or where mosquito density tracking or long-term control plans are required. This “trapping and monitoring” approach helps shift the response from passive control to proactive prevention, reducing mosquito-borne disease risks over time.

Adult Mosquito Removal & Control

When mosquito density rises and adult mosquitoes often gather around plants, walls, dark damp areas, or outdoor activity spaces, professional pesticide treatment should be carried out to quickly reduce biting nuisance and mosquito risk.

Johnson Group provides professional mosquito treatment in indoor and outdoor mosquito hotspots according to site conditions. For locations with severe mosquito issues, large coverage areas, or where a rapid reduction in adult mosquito activity is required, we use cold fogging, which atomises mosquito control agents into fine droplets that cover plants, walls, and common mosquito resting spots, effectively reducing active adult mosquito numbers.

How much does Mosquito Control Service cost?

Johnson Group’s mosquito control fees are based on the site’s actual mosquito risk and the required treatment plan. A single treatment may not solve the problem long term, so we first assess standing water, breeding sources, adult mosquito activity areas, and site usage requirements before recommending the most suitable treatment and quotation. Service costs mainly depend on the following factors:

  • Site Type & Size: homes, estates, restaurants, schools, construction sites, shopping centres, clubs, and outdoor landscaped areas have different coverage and requirements.
  • Severity of Infestation & Number of High-risk Spots: including standing water, drainage channels, manholes, flowerpot saucers, landscaped areas, cluttered storage zones, and adult mosquito resting spots.
  • Required Control Methods: may include standing water management, larval control, mosquito traps, mosquito killers, oviposition monitoring, cold fogging, and follow-up.
  • Service Frequency & Monitoring Needs: rainy seasons, outdoor venues, residential estates, or locations with recurring mosquito issues may require regular inspections and ongoing control under a contract.
  • Site Restrictions & Safety Requirements: for example, areas with children, pets, food handling zones, business-hour limitations, or sites requiring work at specified times.

Mosquito Species & Habits in Hong Kong

Mosquitoes are small flying insects. Female mosquitoes have narrower wings and piercing-sucking mouthparts used to pierce skin and feed on the blood of other animals. Male mosquitoes have larger wings and shorter, thicker mouthparts used to feed on plant sap and sugars.

In the immature stage, that is, the larval stage, mosquitoes are usually black or dark brown and appear in still or slow-moving water. Most mosquito larvae have a distinctive air siphon at the rear of their bodies. After the larval stage comes the pupal stage, where mosquito pupae are comma-shaped from the side, do not feed, but can move in water.

So far, about 70 mosquito species have been found in Hong Kong. Common species include Aedes albopictus, Anopheles minimus, Anopheles sinensis, Culex quinquefasciatus, Aedes togoi (coastal Aedes), and Culex tritaeniorhynchus.

Anopheles minimus
Small in size and dark brown, typically found in clean, slow-moving water. Feeds at night and is an important vector of malaria.

Mosquito Life Cycle

The mosquito life cycle generally consists of four stages, which may vary slightly by species.

  • Egg Stage
Female mosquitoes lay eggs on water surfaces or moist soil. Some can lay more than 100 eggs at a time. Eggs in water usually hatch within about a day, while those laid on soil can remain dormant for months or even years until submerged again.

  • Larval Stage
Larvae live in water and feed on organic matter. They are commonly found in ponds, reservoirs, drainage channels, and various water-holding containers.

  • Pupal Stage
Pupae also live in water but do not feed. After a short development period, they emerge as adult mosquitoes.

  • Adult Stage
Adult mosquitoes leave the water surface and begin activity. Female mosquitoes feed on blood for reproduction, while males feed on plant nectar. They then reproduce in suitable environments, completing the life cycle.

Mosquito Control Service FAQs

Hong Kong has a subtropical climate with warm, humid weather all year round, and frequent rainfall creates many standing water environments that provide ideal breeding conditions for mosquitoes. Dense urban development also creates many potential breeding sites, such as rooftops, podiums, drainage systems, and construction sites.

If adult mosquitoes are only treated when they appear in large numbers, without also removing standing water and controlling larvae, mosquito problems can easily return after rain or during seasonal changes.

Because mosquitoes have a short breeding cycle, and eggs, larvae, and adult mosquitoes may exist at the same time in different environments, a single treatment mainly targets adult mosquito control and only provides short-term relief.

Johnson Group recommends combining regular prevention with source control, such as removing standing water and using larvicides, to achieve long-term control from multiple angles.

Common mosquito species in Hong Kong include Aedes albopictus, which can transmit dengue fever and Zika virus, and house mosquitoes, which are highly nuisance-causing. Different species vary in activity time, habitat, and breeding habits.

For example, Aedes albopictus is more active during the day and prefers small containers of standing water. Professional services will develop targeted strategies based on mosquito characteristics.

Johnson Group’s professional mosquito control services generally use approved chemicals that meet safety standards, applied by qualified technicians according to guidelines to minimise effects on people and pets.

During and after treatment, technicians will provide safety advice, such as briefly avoiding treated surfaces and keeping the area well ventilated to ensure the environment remains safe.

Mosquito breeding depends on standing water, and even a small amount of still water can allow mosquito eggs to hatch. Common high-risk areas include flowerpot saucers, air-conditioner drip points, drains, discarded containers, and rubbish storage areas. In addition, landscaped areas and hidden corners can retain moisture and become places where mosquitoes shelter and breed.

Professional mosquito control usually combines multiple techniques, including chemical control, such as space spraying and larvicide application, physical control, such as mosquito killers and mosquito traps, and environmental management advice. A comprehensive approach not only reduces adult mosquito numbers but also effectively breaks the breeding cycle and improves overall control results.

All three can be used in specific larval breeding environments, but they differ in how they work, the water bodies they are suitable for, and usage requirements. Johnson Group will recommend the most suitable treatment based on the standing water conditions, site usage, and safety considerations.

Cold fogging can be used to treat flying or resting adult mosquitoes on plants and environmental surfaces, making it suitable for severe mosquito problems or situations where adult mosquito activity needs to be reduced quickly. However, to reduce the risk of recurrence, standing water, larvae, and mosquito breeding hotspots still need to be addressed at the same time.

Mosquito control services are suitable for many types of sites, including homes, commercial buildings, restaurants, schools, construction sites, and public spaces. Professional teams will tailor the work schedule, methods, and safety measures according to site use, foot traffic, and environmental characteristics to ensure treatment can be carried out without affecting daily operations.

After treatment is completed, a noticeable reduction in adult mosquito numbers can usually be observed within a short period. However, the overall result depends on environmental factors and surrounding mosquito sources, such as nearby breeding sites. Ongoing monitoring and regular follow-up help maintain mosquito control and prevent the problem from returning.

To improve efficiency and safety, customers are advised to clear visible standing water and clutter before the service, and ensure the area is accessible. Indoor spaces should have food, utensils, and personal items properly stored, and pets should be temporarily separated if necessary. These preparations help technicians carry out the treatment more thoroughly and effectively.

When choosing a mosquito control company, it is recommended to first assess the safety of the chemicals used, whether the control methods combine chemical treatment and environmental management, and whether pricing is transparent with after-sales support. Since mosquito problems usually require integrated management, the following key points may help:

  • Assess the control strategy: a good company should not rely only on spraying insecticides, but should also remove breeding sites, install mosquito killers, and set up physical barriers as part of an integrated control plan.
  • Request transparent quotations: ask for a detailed quotation and confirm the billing method, treatment scope, chemical types used, and number of treatment visits.
  • Confirm after-sales maintenance: professional mosquito control is usually an ongoing process and requires continuous follow-up. Confirm whether the contract includes free follow-up or re-treatment within a specific period.
  • Review market reputation: it is advisable to compare reviews or case studies from at least three companies and understand their actual experience in dealing with mosquito problems in your area, such as Aedes albopictus.
